The Importance of Community Engagement with TONIMO Foundation
In the aftermath of conflict and trauma, rebuilding communities in Northern Uganda requires more than external interventions, it demands listening, collaboration, and inclusion. Recognizing this, TONIMO Foundation organized a “Meet and Listen” session, a critical moment for reconnecting with community members, hearing their voices, and co-creating solutions that reflect their real needs and priorities.
During this engagement, the community spoke passionately about two urgent issues: environmental restoration and food security. Participants emphasized the need for a tree-planting initiative to address deforestation, particularly in areas like the Elgon mountains where trees have been cut down extensively. They envisioned planting trees not only for personal use and economic benefit through sales, but also for restoring ecological balance and protecting their environment for future generations.
Equally pressing was the issue of food security. Community members highlighted the importance of growing food both for household consumption and as a source of income. They also raised questions about how to sell their produce effectively, pointing to the need for stronger market access, storage, and support for livestock keeping as part of a broader strategy to build resilience and sustainability.
The session was more than a discussion; it was a demonstration of the community’s agency and willingness to shape their own future. For TONIMO Foundation, it was a reminder that effective development begins by listening. By collecting data on community needs, levels of participation, and inclusion, TONIMO laid the groundwork for programs that are not only relevant but also owned by the community itself.
This “Meet and Listen” session was important because it built trust, strengthened collaboration, and ensured that TONIMO’s initiatives would align directly with the lived Experiences/realities of the people we serve. It was a step toward restoring dignity, building resilience, and creating a shared vision for environmental restoration and food security in Northern Uganda.
